Reduce Sugar Intake.
If you’re trying to lose weight and fighting an underarm issue, chances are you’ve already cut down on your alcohol intake. You may be tempted to see if any of your other habits might be contributing, such as drinking a little too much coffee or having a few too many meals out.
But what about sugar? Do you realize that eating too much sugar can cause us to create more underarm body fat and actually make it harder for us to burn off what we already have? Avoid eating sugary foods and drinks like cookies, candy bars, donuts and soda.
Opt instead for healthier alternatives with less sugar in them like fruits, vegetables and sports drinks. You’ll not only feel better but also start losing unwanted body fat quickly when you avoid sugar.
Exercise, Exercise, Exercise.
One of easiest ways to see a difference in your body is to exercise, particularly cardiovascular workouts. A good rule of thumb: Try one new activity a week—whether it’s an exercise class or just going for a run.
Studies show that being physically active boosts confidence and helps you live longer. If weight loss is your goal, aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity) each week.
Adding in three strength-training sessions will help you maintain lean muscle mass while dropping pounds. Aim to complete at least two sets of eight reps for each exercise, but always push yourself by increasing weights as well as number of reps.
For example, if you normally do 12 reps with a 5-pound dumbbell, increase it to 10 pounds during your next session. You should also try a variety of exercises—such as squats, deadlifts and bench presses—to work different muscles throughout your body.
Start slowly so you don’t injure yourself; if you haven’t worked out in awhile, start with five minutes of walking and build up from there.
Avoid Oily Foods.
Oily foods increase your body’s production of sebum, a natural oil that lubricates hair and skin. Sebum also helps protect your body from bacteria and viruses. Sebum production is slowed down by regular exercise.
Add in an anti-perspirant deodorant before working out so you won’t sweat more than normal when you start exercising. This will prevent any extra stress on hair follicles, which could trigger an abnormal growth pattern under your arms.
Over time, some of these excessive hairs may even fall out naturally, giving you soft, smooth underarms free of excess hair growth. Don’t wax or shave: Some women think shaving or waxing makes their underarm area look cleaner and healthier.
But both methods can irritate sensitive skin, making it redder and itchier than usual. If you’re trying to get rid of dark armpit hair because it makes you feel self-conscious about wearing sleeveless tops or dresses, don’t worry about it.
Darker armpits are actually healthier because they show less dirt buildup—the dead skin cells usually visible on lighter skin are generally invisible against darker tones. Just make sure to wear sunscreen regularly if you have darker underarms—exposure to UV rays can cause sunspots over time.
Eat Protein Rich Foods.
Protein helps your body build and repair muscle, which burns a lot of calories at rest. Eating plenty of protein can help you tone up and lose belly fat faster. Choose lean sources like chicken, fish, eggs and tofu for your meals.
Another great way to incorporate more protein into your diet is through supplements. Protein shakes or supplements are great ways to increase calorie intake if you’re not getting enough from whole foods; just be sure not to overdo it on these as they are high in calories.
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein is .8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For example, a 140-pound woman should consume about 70 grams of protein per day. If you exercise regularly and want to add even more protein to your diet, check with your doctor first about adding a supplement.
There are also vegetarian alternatives such as soy-based proteins that can provide an alternative source of healthy fats and essential amino acids while helping you reach your weight loss goals.
Use Sunscreen.
It’s tempting to think that you won’t get sunburned if you apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you head outside, but that simply isn’t true. If you get too much sun, even with sunscreen on, your skin will turn red and inflamed—even if it doesn’t feel like it.
In order to avoid excessive damage from ultraviolet radiation (which can lead to skin cancer), don’t stay in direct sunlight for more than an hour at a time. Make sure your skin is protected with sun-blocking clothing and hats when you go outdoors during daylight hours throughout summertime. Your best bet is going outside early in the morning or late in the evening when there are fewer harmful rays of light.
Drink Lots of Water.
It may seem like common sense, but many people neglect to drink enough water. Not only can dehydration make you feel tired and sore, it makes it harder for your body to get rid of excess waste through urination.
When you’re well-hydrated, your urine is pale yellow or clear; if it starts becoming more dark yellow or tea-colored, that’s a sign you need more H2O. The Institute of Medicine recommends women consume 91 ounces (about 2.7 liters) of total beverages per day—that’s about 10 cups (2.4 liters).
That may sound like a lot, but it doesn’t have to be all at once: try sipping slowly throughout your day instead of downing eight big glasses in one sitting. You’ll still stay hydrated without getting too full before dinner time! And don’t forget that coffee and herbal teas count toward your daily fluid intake as well—just be sure not to add any sweeteners or creamers after you’ve already counted towards your total liquid intake for the day.
Use Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide Combo.
Both baking soda and hydrogen peroxide have strong antibacterial properties. When mixed together, they create a fizzing reaction that effectively kills odor-causing bacteria. To use, simply make a thick paste of baking soda and water, then add three drops of hydrogen peroxide.
Apply it directly to your underarms with a cotton ball and leave it on overnight. In addition to getting rid of excess hair, exfoliating with baking soda leaves your skin soft as well—bonus! If you want even softer skin in these sensitive areas, grab some sugar or honey on your next trip to the grocery store; mixed with coconut oil, both make effective natural exfoliators.
